Start Smart

Start Smart is a two-hour seminar for those considering starting a business. If you're thinking about ever starting a business, taking this class is the first step! Attendees learn startup information regarding recordkeeping, marketing & market research, financing, taxes, insurance, legal aspects and regulations. Special emphasis is placed on business planning. This class also provides an excellent introduction to all of our services at the Business Development Centre, and is held periodically in Lynchburg and throughout the region.

SELF Employment Training

The SELF Employment Training Program is a 6-week course covering the fundamentals of owning your own business. This program will provide you with skills you will need to be self-employed, with a special emphasis on business planning. The program is designed for new start-up or existing business owners who want to improve skills such as:

  • Marketing
  • Cash Flow Analysis
  • Bookkeeping & Accounting
  • Legal and Tax Issues
  • Compiling a Business Plan
  • Budgeting & Financing
  • Pitfalls & Business Hints

Or you may call us to obtain a form. Completed forms can be mailed or brought to the Centre, with your $75.00 registration fee to reserve your seat in class. Please indicate which class session you wish to attend. Classes meet Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm, except the first Wednesday of each session which will start at 6:30 pm for orientation.

Small Business Tax Planning Strategies Workshop

The Region 2000 SBDC and the Lynchburg Retail Mercant's Association, Inc. (RMA) are pleased to cosponsor this workshop. Learn about the basics of tax planning, whether you're a new or existing business owner. Attend this seminar to help prepare your 2010 business tax returns and learn tax planning tips to help reduce your tax burden in 2010 and 2011. Also learn about recent changes in small business tax law. The seminar will be conducted by CPAs from Coley, Eubank & Company, P.C. and will be engaging and accessible. You don't have to be an accounting whiz to take this class!

Learn how to use guerilla tactics with today's technlogy and tools, and learn from the region's top internet marketers! Sessions will be held on Thursdays, May 6, June 3, and September 16 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the BDC.
